In a market where high-quality reproductions grow increasingly sophisticated, the ability to authenticate a Hermès Birkin has never been more critical. Our Senior Authenticator, Alexandre M., has examined thousands of pieces over his career. Here, he shares the definitive authentication framework used by our expert team.
1. The Leather
Authentic Hermès leather has a distinctive character that develops through a proprietary tanning process. Togo leather should feel supple yet substantial, with a visible but refined grain that is never perfectly uniform. Epsom leather presents a more structured, pressed grain with slight geometric regularity. The key tell: genuine Hermès leather has a warmth and depth to the touch that no reproduction has successfully replicated.

Hold the bag at an angle in natural light. Authentic leather will show subtle colour variations and a natural lustre that synthetic or inferior leathers cannot achieve.
2. The Stitching
This is perhaps the most reliable authentication point. Hermès uses the point sellier (saddle stitch), a hand-stitching technique where two needles pass through each hole simultaneously. The result: stitches that angle slightly, creating a subtle diagonal pattern. Machine stitching, by contrast, produces perfectly vertical stitches.
Count the stitches per centimetre — genuine Birkins typically have 5 stitches per cm on standard leather models. The thread should be waxed linen (lin câblé), with a slight sheen but never glossy.
3. The Hardware
Hermès hardware is produced in-house and plated to exacting standards. Gold-plated hardware should have a warm, rich tone — never brassy or overly yellow. Palladium hardware presents a cool, matte-silver finish. Examine the turnlock: the Hermès stamp should be crisp, centred, and evenly pressed, with consistent depth across every letter.

4. The Stamp
Every Birkin carries a blind stamp on the strap beneath the front flap. This includes the Hermès logo, the artisan’s personal mark, and a letter indicating the year of production. The stamp should be clean, centred on the strap, and pressed to a consistent depth. Since 2015, Hermès uses a single letter followed by a shape to indicate the year.
5. The Interior
The interior of a genuine Birkin is finished with the same attention as the exterior. The leather lining should be smooth, evenly coloured, and free of adhesive residue. The zipper pocket features a lambskin lining and a high-quality zipper. The heat stamp inside the pocket should be perfectly centred and clearly legible.
