Hermès Birkin: the story

The Hermès Birkin was created in 1984, after a chance meeting on a flight between Hermès chairman Jean-Louis Dumas and the actress Jane Birkin, who wanted a bag large enough for everyday life. Recognisable by its two handles, flap, sangles and padlock with clochette, each Birkin is made by a single artisan using the house's saddle stitch. Sizes range from the Birkin 25 to the Birkin 40, in Togo, Epsom, Clemence and exotic leathers.
